    Dirt To Asphalt Changes

    I recently found out we have an asphalt track local that runs 4-5 times a year. If my kart is setup well on dirt, what typically needs changed to make it work on asphalt? It is 1/5 to 1/4 mile I believe, was told 14/64 gear in clone medium/heavy if that helps, completely flat.

    Also assuming from reading that Yellow Vega MCS are the way to go? 10" RS rims, 6.5" LF and adjust the LR for stagger between 5.5-6.5" width? What kind of prep should I be looking at, Hot Lap or something a touch more aggressive? Do they prep internal?

    Never ran asphalt before and this looks fun, so was considering trying it out.

    6 left rear.

    Generally less LF camber, more RF camber, lower castor, higher left side weight

    Thanks! About how many races are a set of Vega MCS tires good for?

    It really depends on your competition level. The tires will last (rubber wise) longer then the speed potential will in them.

    My understanding it's hit or miss, but usually 4-5 karts maybe. About how many heat cycles are they good for before they slow down? If I'm researching correctly most use a heat gun and scraper to clean them and a prerace wipe of something not very aggressive to fire them off. This is in the infield of a figure 8 car track, not a dedicated kart track but they run on it.

    I have found (on average) you can get 3-4 weekends out of a set of Vega's on a local level before they are fried. I usually flip them every 25 laps, as the shoulders will wear heavily on the inside from stagger.

    If the races are in the middle of the summer and it's hot out, I wouldnt use any prep. If its spring/fall or cool temps, I usually roll a little inside, but dont wipe anything outside. Wiping outside on pavement isnt where your prep speed is, its all done internal

    JP has the knowledge and has helped us a ton over the years. Totally agree with what hes saying prep wise and we usually get 4-5 races before I noticed a drop in lap times, but with that being said it really depends on the track surface. Some tracks just use up more tire than others.
    Ive never flipped a tire, a lot of guys do though, I heat gunned them at the track and cleaned em up like a dirt tire during the week.

    There is a track in Tennessee that is asphalt that is opening back up this year. TKA. Tn Karting assoc.. Dickson,Tn. Where is the track you are talking about?

    Sportsdrome Speedway in Clarksville, Indiana, it's the infield of a figure 8 and oval car track.

    Appreciate all the input and feedback, I'm a dirt guy and can usually hit it close on dirt but thinking about trying the asphalt I was totally lost. I'll be riding my 2008 Mongoose Gravity, bought it new and rode it maybe 6 times before moving out of state for 10 years so it's pretty much brand new.

    I'm extremely familiar with the Mongoose, I have been riding them since 2008. Paul White still drives for me today.
