ring gap

Would using the standard ring gap of .15" make a loss of performance over having the file fit ring gap of .03"?
and if the gap is .15" how many hours of running time would it take to say wear to .20"?
Thanks

Well I'm sure having the gap .12" over the recommened amount of .03" is better than fileing the piston ring grooves with a file to fit the WF rings
I would just like to know if it will make a difference to my performance!

Re: ring gap

where did you buy your piston from? On the GX160 piston with the long skirts it doesn't look like there is enough room for the larger rings?

Re: ring gap

Karterdan are using metric units or inches? I am almost certain you didn't mean .150" for ring end gap but maybe I am wrong.

Now you being in the UK are probably referring to Honda spec of
Top and Second 0.20mm - 0.40mm .008-.016"

If you are using metric an LJCraft is speaking imperial, you are not the same page, blind leading the blind.

If you are close to the specs you will not feel the difference, it is minimal don't worry about it.

I am handy with a file, I can finish a piece of steel to a well polished surface, draw filed. As far as taking a hand file to your piston ring grooves I am not sure that was sound advice. i would disregard it.

Re: ring gap

Thankyou kart43. Just what I wanted to know
I am talking about .015" sorry and the recommened .003"
Surely .012" over can't make a difference.
Also, As it is a GX160 piston as I can't get the oversize gx200 piston, We are just grinding the piston. we don't have a way of balancing it. Just doing it by eye, It looks pretty good. Do you think this is ok?

With a angle grinder. Just grinding the skirts so they are the same as a standard gx200 piston so it goes in the engine.

You said you filed out the slots of the piston by HAND. I'd rather just run the compression rings .012" bigger than standard. The WF oil ring fits the oil ring slot so that is atleast file fit.
File the top of the rings to make them thinner?
You'd never get it even all the way round....

Re: ring gap

I am not so sure you are both understanding file fit rings.

In most cases the next oversize ring will be used, the ring end gap will be filed to adjust or set the ring end gap to your desired specification. It is not always necesary to use oversize rings if you have a manufacturer that makes a regular size ring with a tight gap. Incidently every set of rings that get installed should be checked and adjusted as needed.

Yes I know this engine is at .75mm overbore and OEM rings are standard gap.

It is always a toss up with the oversize ring as to which is best the tight end gap ,or are you losing due to extra drag on the cylinder from ring pressure, some will remove ring tension by various methods.

Do not confuse file fit of the end gap, with lapping of the piston ring.

Re: ring gap

no this is the story Kart I had problems with one of my rings on one of my engines...I asked charles would WF .030 rings be file fit size for honda .030 piston since WF tends to be a little bigger... he said he didn't know so be the first to try... I said okay... that next day Karterdan asked me the same thing and I told him I was putting some one my piston so he ordered some... when I got them I had to file the WHOLE ring not just the ends since they were a little thicker... may have taken a little more time BUT IT DOES WORK they are over size and a little thicker but they work am having no issues and after running for 10+ hrs I took it out and my hone was still good and the rings too

Re: ring gap

if anyone needs 160 stock pistons, I got three in stock from ordering the wrong part number and will sell them for cost, which is about 6 bucks each. The only difference in the 160 and the 200s is the length of the skirt. The rings should both be the same.

I also have the rings for both. 5.00 a set for stockers and 15.00 for OEM .010" over honda rings.
