Durometers

As long as Ive been racing I have never used one. Im going to a fee flea markets in the off season looking to pick up a new or used durometer. A durometer is a durometer correct? One's used in Karting are the same as used on a full size race car correct? What should I look for when buying a used one? Any suggestions on brand names?

Re: Durometers

the intercomp i do believe has a finer point then the longacre both are good. jm2c for what a new one is from a good used one i would buy new.

Re: Durometers

I was told that the Intercomp is a much better piece and the Longacre is inconsistent from gauge to gauge.

Re: Durometers

Both are made in China. I was told in the same factory. Don't know if thats true or not. I use a Shore durometer.

Re: Durometers

Yeah we have several Longacre durometers. They tend to be a little different on numbers, but not drastic. The major thing is to use the same way everytime. If you roll it onto the tire the duro number tends to be slightly lower than just to push down onto the tire. Depending on who you talk to, they will tell you one way or the other is the correct way to use it. But like someone said earlier, buy a new one. They are only around 50 dollars new, and at least that way you know how it has been treated and that its accruate. Now they do have several hundred dollar durometers out there that claim to be dead on. It's all on how much you want to spend. But we use the Longacre.

Re: Durometers

i actually had a customer using same gage as mine, longacre.and i said the tires i done for him punched around 54.he said there only like 48 on my gauge.took mine and his on same tire and got same reading out of 2 diffrent gauges.its all how u apply the gauge to the tire.one person does it diffrent than the other.so not always same results.air gauges varry some to.its all just reference points.not magic.i have had same karts same yr and all on scales and read 4 lbs diffrent.here again reference point.nothing is perfect.but some things are better.pc

Re: Durometers

Read up on these in WikiPedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durometer

It makes no difference what it reads, as long as it's consistent. Your looking for changes and differences between tires.

I always had good luck with my Rayteck, but it doesn't measure hardness, it measures tire temps.

Re: Durometers

i use a shore durometer. it has a very wide base which helps keep it consistant from person to person. my second choice would be Qucik Car or Intercomp.

Re: Durometers

Use it the same everytime. Youre looking for consistency here. Dont get all worried when someone says my tire is punching such and such, its how you read it that matters.
