SUDAM new or used??

This engine has been around, over ten years. What are the differences from then to now. Looking to own one, don,t know the history. Has there been any case, cylinder, or ignition changes?? Just wanting to know what to look for. Thanks for any input, Duane

Re: SUDAM new or used??

Anyone know of a website that tracks those changes?
Would be great resource for buying used.

The reeds have also changed I believe.

So for a stocker it seems the best purchase would be new.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

I have 2, and the only difference I can see is that 1 has a longer reed assy., the port map is within several degrees, checked with dial indicator and degree wheel. I wouldn't worry about anything in an older engine, just have it up-dated.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

stock port timing is the same because rules mandate so

internal parts are the same for all

the newer sudams are faster because of a bigger reed cage and other subtle changes

there is also the water cooled version which is the fastest of them all

all models after 95 homologation are forbiden here because they are just faster.

Augusto.

That's exactly what we'd like to know, just what makes them faster?

Re: SUDAM new or used??

better heat management due to improved materials, castings, heat disipators and a less restrictive reed cage.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

The bigger reed cage is great at 17000 rpm. I have not seen on the dirt were the big red cage is a must in any way.
Its what your engine builder does with the ports when it gets built. That is what's important.
I have never had a heat problem with mine were you will see heat issues with any engine is going to be on gas not alky.
As long as you dont try running 10.5 on the cc's and 115 btdc on the timming. Run the cc's between 11.5 to 12.0 and 100 btdc on the timming and you are golden.
I have a early Parilla Sudam that has smoked plenty of new sudams and reed twins.
In many cases were grip is a issue on dirt a 116cc is all you need.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

So what year did the Sudam come out?? When was the reed cage area increased, how can you tell the difference.
Finding a water cooled Sudam probably like looking for gold! How much better is the ignition on current engines verses the older ones?
Thanks to you Sudam users, I'm trying to gather up A little generational history here, on this reed valve engine, before diving in the smoker class. One other question, Is there a bigger bang for the buck, than Sudam?
THANKS duane

Not for the same money, a wankel is about $6400 with eveything i was told at CKS to get it on the kart, i think the norm for a stroked sudam is around $3200-$3400
wankel 52hp? my stroked sudam (small cage) 54hp

Re: SUDAM new or used??

for the IAME's Parilla brand, the first generation sudam ended with the 1995 homologation which is probably the best engine for a beginer and most experienced drivers as well.

get one from 1995 up

the 1998 with the horizontal reed cage was not that good

thats possible, i have Collins do my stuff and i think that was his last quote , and CKS said a new open 125 with duals was $3200

Bullers:
125 sudam $2080
built as open $650
Stroker Crank $450
Dual Carbs $395
= $3575

Re: SUDAM new or used??

I thought Buller would charge $500 more because 1st they had to blueprint it. Also, I thought the base price would start at $2150 from the way I read their add. That's where I was thinking a stroker from them would be almost $4200. But what do I know, I have trouble with math, always forget to carry the "Ought". Steve

I would save the $500 "Blueprint," and just save it for 'open' work. They are very nice out of the box w/ 34mm manifold/gas carb on there. I you haven't rode one, I'd say start there!

the leopard is not the same as the sudam, it is the same as the air cooled easykart, it has a smaller bridged exhaust port and has lower event timings than the sudam, it can not be modified to perform like a sudam because of the smaller exhaust port and there is not room to open auxiliary ex ports because of the head studs, hoewever it can be made into a very nice and fast open motor, ask Mike C. he will tell you.

the leopard and easykart have the same cylinder layout as the first generation sudam.

A true water cooled sudam has exactly the same cylinder as the air cooled, and has the 3 port exhaust, it is very very fast, especially on alky, they race it with booze in brazil and it rocks!

Augusto.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

What Kendog says, exactly. I was fortunate to find a good used engine a few yrs. back with 380's on it, added a KB-06 pipe, and some re-boping a yr. later and it will pull right thru the clutch settings that my newer stock engine uses. Also, IMHO, it isn't the H.P. it's the reliability that the Sudam has that let's you concentrate on tires and set-up.

But that would be work! And I want instant gratification!

Bolt on some power and win!

And if I don't win, I can blame the builder for a POS motor.......

Re: SUDAM new or used??

But when you do bolt on more HP you are "forced" to work on setup because the increase in HP makes your kart want to make little cirlces instead of big circles....

http://www.parilla.com.br/

then click on "produtos"

it's the website from IAMESUD, the sudam factory in brazil, the site is in portuguese but you'll understand it.

there you will see alll the generations of the sudam 125 family.

the RL is the water cooled
the RA is the first generation
the evolution is the well known PAR95
and the super 2001 is the last air cooled version.

while you are there take a look at the little PUMA 85 cc, this is a very fast piston port model for the youngsters, it's faster than a yamaha.

Augusto.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

Thanks for the address Augusto. So is all Sudams, with air fins on crank case, made 2001 and after? Also how much Horse power does the Puma 85cc or Parilla PV92 have? Russell Karting has these motors for $600.00. That is the PV92. Just thinking, maybe Two?? UAS allows a 50lb advantage using piston port engines.

Re: SUDAM new or used??

PV92 is a great piston port, and would make great duals (if so inclined).

Augusto, thanks for the correction. I ASSumed the leopard was sudam-link on the inside. That being said, Have never seen one of those "RL's" in the US. Probably not homogolated for anything up here. The air cooled's aren't...which is why you ony hear people talking about them as 'unlmiteds.' Would love to run controlled stock sudam class...

Thanks for that bunch of info, Gusto, BTW, my older Sudam, with the small reed cage, will pull right thru the clutch settings that the newer engine likes, thanks to Pete at Super Dyne.
