Blue OHV(harbor freight 6.5HP) gov removal info
I didnt see any real specific info for doing this, so i thought i'd share my experiences removing the governer from one of these motors.. Pretty straight forward, but may take some patience! I removed the spring that went from the gov arm to the throttle lever. Removed the throttle lever as well(not using this at all on my setup). Loosen the 10mm jam nut for the gov arm and remove the gov arm from the shaft. Remove the 10mm crankcase end plate bolts and carefully slide the crankcase off of the crankshaft. Now comes the tedious part- You have to remove the nylon governer gear. Its the smaller plastic gear that rides on a small shaft on the fylwheel side of the crankcase. Take the small hairpin clip off of the gov arm and the shaft will drop down into the crankcase. You can now remove the plastic cylinder that pushes on the gov arm shaft. There WILL be a small metal washer behind this plasitc cylinder, so be sure to remove it! Now all that is left is the gear itself. It is held onto the small shaft by a metal clip. This metal clip sits on a small goove on the gov gear shaft. You need to either pry the clip apart to enlarge it enough to release it from the goove, or what i eventually did, was to use a small flathead screwdriver, and a hammer to "punch" the clip off of the groove then use some needle nose pliars to remove the clip. I messed with this part for almost an hour to get it off! Once that clip is off, you can just slide the gov gear off of the shaft and remove from the crankcase. Make sure your case is clean. Now you can either cut and remove the gov arm shaft and plug the hole, or keep it. If you keep it in, be sure to postition it correctly, and install the hairpin clip on the shaft. Install your side cover.
I kept the gov arm on, as i use it for my throttle cable hookup. I used a return spring on the arm, and a small bolt through one of the 3 holes on the arm. I used an eyelet(you can use a small electrical "ring terminal" on the calbe as well) on the end of the throttle cable that attached to the bolt. I used a "fender clamp" to retain the throttle cable to the stock throttle lever mount piece. The clamp is basically a U shaped piece, with a nut welded onto one end. I just used a bolt through that lever mount piece, through a hole already there, to attach. Thats basically it to remove the gov,and a little info on rigging up the throttle cable.
So far i've run this up to 5700 rpm, and also broke in the engine with "briggs" 4 cycle oil. I then switched to Castrol Syntec synthetic 0W-30. So far so good. This is on a fun road cart i custom built, not racing, but it goes 38 mph so far, with a 4.8 gear ratio. (10t clutch, 48 sprocket). Using a Sigma BC800 for speedometer.
