Crockpot recipies
When cooking chain, what blend of ingredients do you use. How much wax? How much lube? What types? Whats your method?

Paraffin... You can find it where you find canning supplies in the supermarket.

You don't have to have the wax but it does help.

It holds the oil inside the chain barrels. Once the chain heats up it melts off.

Re: Crockpot recipies
Some follow-up ?s. Is a crockpot/ wax routine still the best way to go? How about dunking the chain in a dry-film lubricant like slip-plate or dri-slide? Or spray-on dri-moly aerosol coating?
Is it better to use 30Wt, 40wt, 50wt or even 60wt oil with wax? Perhaps even gear oil to get the EP additives?
Charger 10, are you saying just spray with WD-40 and forget the crockpot routine? Or are you cooking the chain in WD-40 and wax?
What about Prolink/Progold chain lube? Its pretty thin and travels well into the pins and bushings. (put a drop on a metal workbenchtop and watch it run vs a spray of your favortie chain lube)
What about Dupont Chain Saver?

Re: Crockpot recipies
Call Jim Donovan of Max-Torque, he'll fill you in on chain maintenance and the effects on clutch performance.
Very nice person to talk with...that happens to build great clutches.

I use the crock pot method to prep my chain at home.... RED-E + Wax, but I use Dupont Chain Saver at the track to lubricate the interface between the chain and sprocket.. Great stuff. It also cleans off the dirt and leaves a thin teflon film behind. Smells like coconut WD-40.
If you can't find it, you can get "Dupont Multi-Use Lubricant", which they say is extremely similar, but marketed to a different crowd. $5 at Lowes.. Do a google search for either of these products, and you will find a huge motorcycle following.
Here's a great review: http://www.webbikeworld.com/t2/moto...-chain-lube.htm

Re: Crockpot recipies
What if you weren't concerned about a clutch (don't run one) and just looking for fast and clean chain, no sling off?

Re: Crockpot recipies
Wishbone - curious does the cleaners/solvents in the Dupont Chainsaver washout your wax/oil? Dupont might also be a good chain soak to get to the pins and bushings, found it in bulk at http://www.netmercury.net/dupontteflonlubricants.aspx
Has anyone tried adding a little beeswax to the paraffin, say 20/80 ratio?
How much do you wipe down the chain when it comes out of the crockpot hot, not at all? wipe it down well so you dont have a lot of buildup when it drips and cools? What kind of consitency do you get when running the chain, a light grease?
What about other home brews like 3 part mineral spirits to 1 part oil?

I really don't know what it's doing to the oil/wax internally. I was more concerned about sprocket wear. I always go through sprockets when road racing my WF (no chain oiler).. I can use my sprockets several times now since I switched to Dupont Chain Saver.
