It keeps the compression in the cylinder longer I believe, everyone has there own idea on settings, but one thing is certain, adjust them tighter than factory with the exhaust valve being slightly wider because of heat!

0 to .001 is best.on a stocker you need all the valve lift you can get & you basically don't want the valve to be open any amount on start up and during compression cycle.the exhaust valve needs to transfer all heat it can to the seat/head as the alum head gets hot the valve lashes opens a bit when warm due exspansion.
*too loose will slam on the valve train when opening & closing & cost you air flow due to delayed valve opening. It will also leave engine feeling like it has shorter duration or less valve open time to get a fresh charge. I can tell you on a v-8 steel small block w/ alum heads I went about .006 tighter than spec cards due to expansion when warm and it was about right. Extreme for a small engine but gives you an idea.
**loose lash - slightly more low end, less valve open time, harder on parts. tight lash more mid to top, more valve open time due to more air flow.
I don't know if you would see any of this be noticeable on a stock engine but I am sure a modified level engine would show you something. hope this explains it.
Common guys..
Zero is a magical number impossible to reach....001" to be safe and avoid any starting problems till warm...Once your heated up the lash will be closer to .004"..."Tip of the week" - Slightly tightening the lock nut before adjusting the lash will reduce how much tighter the lash gets on final lockdown...
