Star Motor Info

I bought a kart a few months ago with a Tecumseh Star on it, the guy said it had around 25HP, Cam, Oversized Piston, EC Tilly 360 Carb (I have no problem smoking my buddies new Formula)...

anyway broke the crank on it the other day right next to the rod, chewed up the rod a little but block/piston/cam is still good.. I was wondering where I could find a crank, what kind I should get, and how I can figure out what kind of VKE rod I have on it so I can replace it (just got into racing, and have little experience rebuilding flatheads)..

I also was wondering if I could find some specs on this motor because I also don't know what kind of cam I have on it, it's about twice as big as the gear on my crank and I don't know if the valves are stock, what size cylinder has been bored out too, timing, etc...

Re: Star Motor Info

That's the 2nd time, recently, that I've heard about a Star crank breaking. What's up with that? Are they just getting that fatigued?

Re: Star Motor Info

Might of been my fault... friends tried starting it with hole hog drill, broke end off, we drilled, screwed up (out of center, put a weld in), redrilled, tapped, and used locktite on that bolt and clutch bolt.. ran about 5 10 lap races and it went... also last race before it broke at friends track they had us idle around track for three laps before we got a green flag (so alky was probably pouring in motor) .. crank had about 3/16" of play in it and i was running thor heavy oil in it too.

Re: Star Motor Info

Broke several Star cranks back in 97, 98. It has always been a weak point.

Re: Star Motor Info

I know some guys that used briggs cranks in the star motors.. They used .150 or .200 over billet cranks and machined a sleeve for the side cover and gear also changed the flywheel side bushing... You will need to use briggs piston, rod, and flywheel.. Makes for a lighter rotating assembly.. Or there was a Tecumseh 7 hp crank that would fit the star rod and used a 3/4 clutch. However I dont remember the part number...

hey Bryan, I too looked into swapping around different hm80/hm100 etc parts into the star. I seems the hm100 cranks generally around lately are bigger on the rod journal and crank bearings. I have a hm80 crank that a Star rod fits but not sure if the throw is the same as a Star's.
