Re: reinstalling a flywheel

key: yes
offset: no more than#2 with gas. more with alky
loctite: no.
lapping: just like lapping valves. shouldn't have to do it with a flywheel key.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

Lapping the flywheel is a good idea with or without the key. Always do it. If you degree your cam with a wheel or in the hole, you don't have to use a key. We have not run them for 5 years now and zero problems.

Don't just throw it together. Do it right and make it last.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

i have to bring this topic back up - i am wondering if i did something wrong - anyway the offset key sheared in two and the flywheel spun on the crank - did i not get the flywheel tight enough - should i go ahead and use the loctite to secure it - any ideas would be helpful

thanks

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

like #11u-max said crank down on it,till you feel you might strip it out.usually about 75 lbs ft. if you sheared an offset steel flywheel key you should look real close to the keyways, they may have been damaged. no need for locktite, could break the end of the crank off if it does it again.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

min 75 ft lbs on the nut.

we use closer to 90.

lap the flywheel to the crank with valve compound.

To remove a flywheel properly you need a "knocker" available at most kart shops

Large 3-jaw puller worked for me. When she "Popped" the flywheel came off and the crank shot out the back side...LOL

That's the correct way to install and remove flywheel and never hit with a hammer.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

If you have a small piece of brass, put it over the end of the crank and hit it with the hammer. Or use a brass hammer. I have had to strike it a little harder than I have wanted and when putting the ratchet assembly back on, it didn't go on smoothly. Even the brass can damage the end a little. Just take a file and circular file it until the ratchet slides on. The knocker they are talking about, has brass inside it. When tightening it down, you need to put as much muscle in it as possible. So much that you feel as though you are going to put your shoulder out. Also, make sure the concave washer is in correctly. The bow should be outward.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

I can guarantee that I would snap or strip somethin' if I tried that. Torque it to specs, and maybe a hair more. A little blue loc-tite on the threads is probably not a bad idea. I learned that lesson with the outboard starter nut on my dragbike, and it is torqued to 50 ft. lbs. Hasn't broke loose since.

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

Well, unless you are 6ft 275 or more, I can guarantee you won't unless you are an animal. (lol) There definetly needs to be a sense of "that's it" . I am 5/4 175 and it takes everything I have to tighten her down. I have done that for years and never had one fail. Never stripped one , never broke one. However, I do now torque. Just remembering the how to"s in the beginning days

Re: reinstalling a flywheel

Ya, sometimes you will get one that comes off easy but there will be other times you will need to rethread one or the other because it was a little stubborn and you had to wack it a few times to many.

Funny you say that, its what I was expecting... just trying to beef up my 5hp and changed out to 3hp flywheel.. old one came off easy and I put it on ebay for some extra change.
